R.I.P. Opie

Last week, while I was still too busy to be blogging, I had something very sad happen. I woke up, happy to be sleeping in my new apartment, and went to say good morning to Opie. He was sleeping on the bottom of the bowl, which was a little odd because normally he floated around the top. So I said good morning and he didn't move, so I shook the bowl a little bit, and he still didn't move. Then I realized his face was buried under one of the fake plants, so I got a long spoon and stuck it into the bowl to move the plant, and when I touched Opie, he didn't move...I was so sad. And then I had to get ready to go to work. It was an awful day, because all day at work I had to think about Opie in his bowl and how I'd have to flush him when I got home. Luckily, Mo came over and helped me flush him because I would have been too sad to do it alone. Opie was a great fish, and he lived through a lot. He lived through the 8 months I was in NYC and Mary didn't really feed him often. And then he lived through me dropping him into really hot running water in the bathtub when I was cleaning his bowl, and he lived through a lot of time in a really dirty bowl with almost no water. I guess he was pretty old (I had had him for a long time. Since May of 2003), and the move to the new apartment was probably pretty hard on him. Anyway, I would like to have a moment of silence for him.

Ok, so, yesterday I decided it was time to go get a new fish, because my apartment is great, but a little lonely sometimes. So I went to PetCo., which claims to be all about supplies and fish, but I was really disappointed in their fish selection. I found a bunch that I thought were really pretty, and a couple that I could have bonded with, but then I realized that they were saltwater fish, and I can't get a saltwater fish and put him in Opie's old bowl...so I looked at their Beta fish, and even their Betas were ugly, because they only had females, and the females are the ugly ones. The males (like Opie) are the pretty ones. So I spent like an hour there trying to find the perfect fish, and I couldn't. Maybe it was too soon, but I left without a fish. I did pass the kittens on the way out, and there were 2 kittens, who were brothers, named Simon and Garfunkle. I almost got them, just because then they could sing the all time best song to me all the time (the all time best song being "Cecilia"). But I decided I have to wait until I'm done painting my apartment before I get a kitten, so, if any of you have time to help me paint my apartment and/or know of anyone who has kittens they want to get rid of, let me know.
